Saturday – Finals day. Today saw the worst surf conditions of the event by far, which was a real shame following a week of amazing surfing displays. But the best in the world still put on a show and made the most of the small waves.

Friday saw a change in the plans due to time restraints and only Len from the Irish was in the water. He paddled a great heat and was sitting in second until the last second.

Thursday saw a lot of paddling on the two breaks with quite large sets coming in on the main peak. Ireland had people out in the men’s short (Brendan, Wayne, Len) and long boat (Len), as well as Edel in the ladies semis. Len is still on the way to defending his long boat world

Quick Update from the French Open,

Marty and I had a great trip to the French Open in Plouhinec.  Fred and the team really looked after us.  We had a mix of conditions from fairly good on Friday when we arrived for a freesurf but unfortunately getting worse as the competition progressed until it was cancelled before the finals could be run off.

Unfortunately the performances from the Irish team were just as mixed.  Marty and I were gifted into the quarter finals however the set waves during our heats were at best hip high and we both struggled to generate any speed or manoeuvres.  That said the local guys still managed to score some good waves in tough conditions and we were both knocked out.

Saturday night we were all invited to a music festival organised by the Penn Kalet Trophy. Cool sea shanties to go with the local specialities of moules frites, crepes and cider, awesome.

If anyone is looking for a handy surf trip I'd definitely recommend Brittany, great countryside, great food, and strong local waveski scene.  Will try to get some photos soon and check Marty's Blog for more.
